Aquaculture, as the fastest-growing component of the food-production sector, relies significantly on the participation of women in its development and sustainability. A study in Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria, examines the challenges women engaged in aquaculture face and the implications of their socioeconomic characteristics.60 women involved in aquaculture activities provided data through structured questionnaires and debriefing sessions. The data analysis reveals that the respondents' socioeconomic characteristics substantially influence aquaculture activities. The findings highlight vital challenges such as financial constraints, inadequate government support, lack of basic amenities, health issues, and fluctuating sales and demand. The study emphasizes the critical role of women in aquaculture development, particularly in the fish value chain process. It underscores the need for improved financial support from the government in the form of soft loans, grants, access to affordable healthcare, and other basic amenities. Additionally, the study recommends that women join cooperatives and women's organizations to access affordable credit facilities, support, and other benefits.
